5am run

Recently my 12 years old son Christian has started preparation for his first half marathon.  At least twice a week you can find him running our neighborhood streets at 5am.  I admire his dedication and commitment to his goal.  Some might call him crazy, and yes the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but there have already been so many rewards from his discipline.

For starters he has developed a tremendous amount of pride in his ability to have a goal and to see it through.  Many times people have made comments to him about his dedication, at which he replies with a smile of confidence and constructive pride in what he is accomplishing.  He also has seen his running times decrease and his endurance increase.  We ran 10 miles together last weekend and I am often trying to keep up.

Christianity involves somewhat the same discipline exhibited by my son.  We don't often want to participate in bible study, or church, and it would be so much easier to just do what feels natural as oppose to follow God's plan and design for our life, relationships or work, but we experience so many blessings by living a disciplined life for Christ.

For starters we have the confidence of pleasing our creator and of being in His will.  To be in God's will is to know His voice and to experience His protection and presences.  We also have the wonderful experience of touching others not by what we say, but by how we live.  The is no experience I have enjoyed more than to watch God work through me from only my obedience and not my intent.  Lastly, the peace that passes all understanding comes not from living a life of understanding or intellect, but from living a life of sacrifice and faith in our Lord.

Discipline is not easy or fun, otherwise I think there would be another name for it, but it is critical and necessary as we seek to experience all God has for our lives and for those who come in contact with us.
