  • Pain & Suffering

Why does God allow bad things to happen to us?  Why must we endure the pain and suffering of relationships?  Why most life be so incredibly hard, and relationships even harder?  These are some of the many questions I recieve each and everyday.  People struggling to make sense of their current situation in life.  Fighting the many feelings of pain, depression and loss, enable to breath, and feeling like relief will never come.   As a therapist I will never ...

  • Life is not fair

Life Is Not Fair.  Not long ago, many of you will remember my wife was fighting for her life in the ER of our local hospital.  I recall many sleepless nights wondering if life was ever going to be the same, wondering if I could handle the changes ahead of me, wondering if I had the strength to move on.  This was not the plan I had for my life, and many times I asked God "why me".  Things like this happened to other people.  Had I done something to deserve this?  Had...

  • Victims vs. Survivors

Struggles are a part of life.  To avoid them is to not be human.  When facing the many trials and tabulations of life on earth, I often find victims and survivors.  Victims, will always be victims.  They often let their circumstances dictate their life.  They are trapped in a never ending cycle of victimhood, doomed to continue to wait and watch for the next "shoe to drop".  Victims are often very weak and ill-prepared for the attacks of the enemy, and many times th...

  • Running

As I bike and run the hills around Edmond, Ok, it is very easy to find myself picking up speed as I go down a hill, only to lose momentum and energy as I start up the next hill.  Keep this pace up for a long period of time, and your energy is gone, along with your legs.  The key, for me at least, is to pace myself.  I try to manage both my downhill and uphill speed, to maximize my energy in an effort to finish strong. In life we are all challenged with ups and downs.&nbs...

  • Weak

God did not create us to have all the answers.  He did not create us to solve all our problems.  He did not create us to go through life in our own strength.  God created us to need Him.  Our lives should be full of doubts, fears, anxiety, and uncertainty in our own ability, knowing that in ourselves we are incomplete, but in Christ we are more than conquerers.  Rejoice when life brings you to a place of confusion and trepidation, this is the place where we stop and the ...

  • Deserts

This morning my study was on Moses and his 40 years in the desert (Gen. 3, Acts 7).  A time of little admiration, recognition or accomplishment.  A time where God was working, and Moses was changing.  We all go through a time of desert dwelling (if not many) throughout our lives; Maybe your boss has it in for you, and you worry that your job is in jeopardy.   Or your children are making poor decisions, and you worry about their safety and future.  Maybe yo...

  • difficult times

Difficulties are just around the corner.  It is not a matter of "if", but when.  We are all one car accident, one illness, one bad report card, one sales deal gone bad away from difficult times.  This is the world we live in and as long as we live here, difficulties will be a part of it.  But it is with difficult times that we have the opportunity to recognize our weakness, and to embrace our strength, the Lord.  John 17:33 says, "These things I have spoken to you, so th...

  • Imperfection

This past week I purchased a computer virus that I thought was virus protection software, which ended up shutting down my computer and resulting in a cancellation of my credit card, I had an error in a deposit with my bank which lead to a bank investigation and last minute transfer for billing purposes, and last night the heat went out in part of the house on a very cold morning.  It is so hard to not get extremely frustrated when things aren't perfect.  But the fact of the matter is t...

  • Strong

I met a young lady recently that was going through a divorce.  Her husband of two years had decided their relationship was not enough for him, and he sought happiness elsewhere.  As I visited with this young lady, I was amazed by her resilience and determination.  She was not going to let the situation define her, rather she was going to define the situation.  Instead of seeing herself as a victim, she saw herself as a survivor.  She also recognized God's ...

  • Earthquakes

Last night Oklahoma felt its third earthquake in as many days.  Add this to an already crazy year of record snow fall, droughts and heat, and you have many talking about the end of time.  How lonely a time this most be for those without a savior.  How much  I rely each day for peace through my Lord.  Life very seldom makes sense.  Truth be told, it rarely makes sense.  But God is God, and He is ever present and never changing.  My peace and joy is a c...

  • Never Alone

There are times that I find myself worrying about the future.  Sometimes I worry about money, or maybe about my health.  However, no matter the subject, there is an automatic feeling of security and peace when I recognize that I will never be alone.  Anytime I picture a future with Heather, Madi and Christian, regardless of the circumstances, I feel at ease.  The unconditional love and support that is afforded me by my family, gives me joy and peace regardless of th...

  • God of Today

In the role of counselor, I have the opportunity to come across many struggling people.  Some are in agony over a divorce, some troubled by difficulties with a child, others have job pressures, and others have lost loved ones.  The weight of these problems, added with the difficulties of life in general, can leave us grasping for air.  A sense of loss and confusion can take over our thoughts and emotions, it is like being in a storm with no real sense of direct...

  • Entangled

Hebrews 12:1-2, "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." I recognized today that the answer to all my problems is in these two short ve...

  • Trials

James 1:2-4, "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.  And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." I have a hard time using the words "joy" and "trials" in the same sentence.  They seem so opposite.  Trials don't bring me joy, they bring me anxiety, frustration, and fear.  How can I see joy in something that presents the opp...

  • midyear

As I reflected recently on the first half of 2011, I am grateful for God's presence through the many challenges and obstacles our family faced.  I am struck by the strength and hope that is available through these various difficulties.  God never promised that I would not suffer, only that He would never leave me and that He would always love me.  What a blessing suffering can be. Romans 5:3-5, "And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulations br...

  • know peace

Peace comes from the Lord and the Lord is our peace.  To know peace you must better know the Lord.  The deeper our relationship with Him the greater the peace in any and all circumstances. 2 Thess.  3:16, "Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance, The Lord be with you all!
