Death

Yesterday I attended a funeral and was reminded how very hard death is under any circumstances.  As Christians, death is our biggest challenge....the death of ourselves.  Whenever we put away something permanently, even something bad for us, it can be difficult.  Ask anyone currently trying to quite a bad habit like smoking.  It isn't that they think smoking is good for them, or even enjoy some of the consequences, but death of something we have experienced for so long is not often an easy or enjoyable thing.

To put death to sin in our lives is not an easy or enjoyable thing as well.  Christians must battle day and night the flesh and self-centeredness that often makes camp in our mortal bodies.  One of the toughest jobs of a Christian is to do what often seems unnatural and counter to our earthly instincts.  To put away our innate desires and urges is not without its difficulties.  But it is also not without its rewards.

James 1:12 says, "Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.  And we love Him through obedience.  2 John 1:6 says, And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments".

The life or a christian is not easy, it never will be.  But that is the point.  We have chosen a higher more difficult road first walk by our Lord and Savior Jesus.  It is one void of popularity, often lonely and many times without peers.  But it also one of lasting peace and genuine joy from a source that has no limitations and no end.
