does not seek its own

1 Corinthians 13 verse 5 says, “it does not seek its own”, “it” meaning love. So that says to me that love is about having a servant spirit, about being selfless. To me this specific love attribute mentioned in the middle of all these “do’s” and “don’ts” by Paul is one of the central keys to a prosperous marriage. It you can’t fully grasp, understand and apply the concept of “selfless love” it will be hard for you to realize, appreciate and enjoy the wonderful gift God created for us in marriage. “We love because He first loved us”, 1 John 4:19. Christ is and always will be our marriage example, and His love for us is how we are to love our spouse. The fact that He would die for the sins I committed yesterday, the ones I will commit today, and all my future sins, is a testimony to how I am to love my wife. If sacrificial, my love can’t be about Heather’s actions or attitudes, good, bad or indifferent. As a matter of fact, I show true love towards her when I feel she doesn’t deserve my love and I love her anyway.
