picture in the picture

Things are not always what they appear.  I remember some time ago, you could find posters in every mall with pictures that at first glance looked like a bunch of ink blots or random designs, but as you looked closer a picture would appear.  It was a picture in a picture.

Life is not unlike these pictures.  Let me explain.  Yesterday felt like a busy day, I needed to run, to keep up my preparation for my next race, all three cars needed to be washed, and Christian (my son) had a basketball game.  It would have been very easy to see this as a day full of "have to's".  No real time to do what "I" wanted to do.  No relaxing, just obligations.  Yet I decided to try and see the picture within the picture.

I asked Christian if he wanted to join me on my run, he accepted to my surprise, and what came of it was a beautiful run on a clear January morning, sharing God and life with my 12 year old son.  What a blessing.  As we returned to the house, Christian asked if he could earned some extra money helping me wash the cars.  We agreed and spent the next hour washing cars and talking about what it would be like when he was able to wash his own car.  Another magical moment with my one and only son.  Lastly, we left the girls at home and enjoyed his basketball game and Sonic for dinner, a guys night out to end are day of activities.

When I woke up yesterday morning (Saturday), I did not plan to spend the day with my son.  Truth be told, I expected a day of chores, have to's, and obligations.  I did not expect much else.  What I ended up with however, was a day of growth and connection with a great kid, and a friend I will have for ever.

One of the most important thing you can do as a parent is spend one on one time with each one of your kids.  This is not as much about today, as the relationship you are building for tomorrow.  When time and obligations get in the way, look for the picture in the picture.
