Prayer is our unique right and privilege to bring God into our lives.  It is an opportunity to effectively gain perspective in times of trials and troubles, by having fellowship with our creator.  It brings God and His infinite love into our life circumstances.

But prayer is not a way out of suffering and pain.  Yes, prayer can result in greater peace, but it is not a guarantee of it.  At times suffering is, and will be, required in this life.  It is both an opportunity and privilege to recognize and glorify God regardless of our circumstances.  It is a chance to make God higher than our comfort.  It is a state of surrender and trust in God, His love and His plan.

Philippians 3:8, "More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ."
