Skiing

This past weekend I had the opportunity to enjoy one of my favorite activities, with one of my favorite people.  My son Christian and I spent two days boarding and skiing in the Colorado mountains.  The first day was beautiful, blue skies and a clear view of the amazing landscape.  I am never more aware of God's wonderful design than when I am in Colorado.

The second day brought a totally different climate, 18 inches of snow with wind and colder temperatures.  This is good news, bad news, for any seasoned skier.  The good news is fresh powder, new snow that offers fresh trails, and the opportunity to feel the wonderful sensation of floating on a powder-like substances, soft and quiet.  I equated it to floating on air or flying.  I love powder.  However, the bad news is that the wind and cold can be unbearable at times, especially on a 10-15 minute lift, suspended in the air, with no protection from the elements.

Like any obstacle we face in life, very often the good comes with the bad.  I can't have fresh powder without a little cold.  To be thankful for the powder, is to appreciate the cold and wind that often comes with it.  Our ability to weather the storms of life is also conditioned on our vision to be thankful for God's presence and provisions along the way, regardless of the circumstances.  God wants us to see the wonderful joy and opportunity that He provides us each day through a relationship with Him.  However, we must first be able to see past the cold and wind that is often a product of the world we live in.

Psalm 89:15-16, "How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!  Oh Lord, they walk in the light of Your countenance.  In Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted."
